f^2 + f^2 = 2*f^2

similarly, x + x = 2x

the only difference is that the two are squared, but there is no real difference...

f² + f² = 2f².

As long as the exponent and variable are the same, you can always add the coefficients. You couldn't simplify the following equation, however:

f² + f

because the exponents are different.
