We may never know who "invented" the technique. It's a shame that folks can't see any farther than Eddie Van Halen. It's promising that some have actually looked into this, going back as far as the middle centuries to classical music on instruments other than the guitar. Eddie certainly popularized the technique almost single-handedly in rock, but Stanley Jordan took it to another level entirely in Jazz. He didn't know the "correct" tuning for a guitar and tuned it from a piano and taught himself to play lead and rhythm at the same time via an astounding two-handed tapping technique that is his alone. He doesn't even need percussive accompanyment, and sounds like a whole band playing. You should really check it out.

Steve Hackett from the group Genesis used a tapping technique as early as 1971 (in the album Nursery Cryme), Frank Zappa did this with a pick in 1973 and also Brian May of Queen used the tapping technique.

Van Halen has claimed he developed his signature tapping approach after studying the guitar solo from the Led Zeppelin song "Heartbreaker" (played by Jimmy Page):

“ I think I got the idea of tapping watching Jimmy Page do his "Heartbreaker" solo back in 1971. He was doing a pull-off to an open string, and I thought wait a minute, open string ... pull off. I can do that, but what if I use my finger as the nut and move it around ?" ... I just kind of took it and ran with it.

Emmett Chapman was the first to tap on guitar with his right hand fingers lined up parallel to the frets, as on the left hand, but from the opposite side of the nec). His discovery, in August, 1969, led to complete counterpoint capability and a new instrument, the Chapman Stick, and to a new method Chapman called "Free Hands" method.
