most of it settles to the bottom of the tank. that is why it isn't very good to constantly run very low on gas before you fill up. what doesn't settle gets caught in the sock type screen filter at the fuel pict up tube in the tank. anything that gets past that gets caught in the fuel filter. some very tiny particals may get through to the injectors or if carborated the jets and can cause problems.

Your car has a fuel filter between the gas tank and the engine, but you shouldn't let any foreign matter get into your tank. For example, if you're gassing up and the wind is blowing sand and dirt around, shield your gas tank opening from the debris. The more debris that gets into your tank, the faster you clog your fuel filter and the faster you'll need to change it, and if any particles get through your filter, they'll tend to clog your fuel injectors or carburetor. Also, don't let water (rain) get into your tank. Gas and water don't mix, and water in your tank will definitely cause you problems.

The larger particles will be caught by the sock, which is a screen on the pickup from the fuel pump. The smaller particles are caught by the fuel filter. Any really large particles stay in the tank, and just float around.

it will eventually wind up in the fuel pump or the filter, most of the time it wont pass, the filter,if it does though,it will wind up in the injectors, this doesn't happen very often though, most of the time the filter will get it all, good luck with it.

usually the fuel filter should strain anything out of the fuel...........if it is large chunks of something it may restrict fuel flow causing lower mileage
