I don't think there is a legal requirement, but if I were an employer I would tell the employees--because:
1. it affects morale and productivity, if people think they are getting spied on or observed without their knowledge.
2. the point of the cameras would be security and inventory protection. The objective is security and protection--not criminal convictions. In other words, the cameras would be more effective if everyone knew that they were there.
3. it would be important to deal with people's fears and concerns about the cameras--the employer could assure everyone that there are no cameras is restrooms or changerooms and that sort of thing. The rumour mill would kick into high gear if such assurances were not given.

There's little gadgets you can buy that are supposed to be able to detect bugs and cameras. They're often sold right next to the bugs and cameras in fact.
No idea if they work.
Anyway, to paraphrase Dilbert's pointy haired boss, that sounds like something a guilty person would ask.
By the way, interesting fact, a structure in which all the inmates, er, employees, are subject to covert surveillance at unknown times is called a "Panopticon." Look it up. The pickled inventor is encased in a glass box in a university somewhere.

because of serendipity, it doesn't matter if the cameras are there.
They don't need to have the video as proof of (what ever), they simply use it to send a janitor or manager to that general area for some made up reason so that you are caught by a witness rather than a camera which may violate your civil rights.

No i doubt that they have to really tell you anything, but more then likely yes there is camera, but the last thing i would do is ask......it will really give them a reason to watch you, so stay cute u dont want to get caught looking bad!

Telling you they were there would defeat the purpose of HIDDEN cameras. Your best bet is to assume you ARE being monitored. Most of my employers have just used VISIBLE cameras. Of course, everyone KNOWS there are cameras in banks and retail stores to begin with.

No they don't. In common work areas you have no expectations for privacy at work. As for detecting them, don't waste your time. Spycams come in ultra small sizes, and can be disguised in just about anything.
