No Carly, nothing would happen 'to' you if you simply read a book. I agree with the person above me that you probably want to get a book from a bookstore and not one that someone has been working with.
I'd also like to recommend this book - it really covers a lot of the basics in excellent to understand language and the exercises are really do-able too. It's called 21st Century Wicca by Jennifer Hunter. You can get it from amazon starting at a penny (an old but unread book is okay :) :

There is nothing wrong with trying to understand it a little better, even if you never choose to become a witch yourself. I would be careful looking at spell books though. Some authors are frauds and say that their spells have power simply from the words themselves. They don't. Spells have power from the caster's intent not the words or ritual.

THE ELEMENT ENCYCLOPEDIA OF 5000 SPELLS
by Judika Illes, published in 2004
This is one of many books in my library at home. I have a few that have been passed down in my family. There is one that I know has been in our family since the early 1700s, it is in my sister's home in Massachusetts.
When you practice the craft you keep a nice little journal of spells, remedies & the sort.
It's only a book.
Reading the bible will not make you a believer because it also is only a book.
So expand your knowledge of everything that is around you. Ask questions. You cannot take everything on blind faith, some things, you need to discover for yourself.

If you want valid reliable reading material your best bet is Scott Cunningham, if you want fluffy BS and misguidance go with Ravenwolf. Reading about witchcraft will cause no harm, it will broaden your horizons and understanding. It just may bring you out of the darkness called ignorance! But I would not recommend spell books unless you decide this is a path that you would like to follow, and any good (successful) witch will tell you that the spells that work best are the ones that she/he writes themselves.

I don't know where you would find a "spell" book since most book of spells are crap so you will just give $20 to the writer.
I love everything by Amber K, Patrica Telsco, Scott Cunningham and Silver Ravenwolf's first couple books weren't bad (To ride a Silver Broomstick). They deal alot more with theories and formulas so you can write your own spells.

The label Witch is the invention of the Christians. Though now, it has accrued honor because of many who have worn it proudly in adversity. What has always been is the crafts. Historically these have been many, but here are a few.
Dowsing
Midwifery
Healer
Bone setter
Herbalist
Maker of potions
Candle maker
Animal caller
Scientists
Teachers of philosophy
Psychic
Empath
Maker of poultices
Librarians
Finder of Ley Lines
All of those within the above crafts have been called witches by Christianity and many executed for practicing their craft. There is neither white nor black in all these crafts. Nor is there an easy way to learning of the building or use of spells.

Spells are nothing more than ritual, which attempts, through repetition, to focus the mind. Catholics, Buddhists , Muslims, and Protestants do it frequently.
Witches have a mystique, unjustified, as being "bad girls." Most of them were merely Druid priestesses, anyhow, who ran afoul of the new, more powerful, Christian warlords.
Have fun and be kind to all.

It won't hurt to read spell books, because the majority of them aren't even authentic.
"Witchcraft" simply means sorcery. Many people these days think of Wicca when they read the word witchcraft.

I would be really careful about handling a book that was previously owned. You can buy something at Borders or Barnes and Nobles, but I would be careful. I would not tamper with ouiji boards either.
