It looks like you have copied the
specs from the case of a pc game.

No problem to get an engine at your
upper price limit - even dell is an option.

Here, you'd get a 4200+ Athlon x64 dual +
1 GB RAM, with onboard graphics (ati1250)
160 GB HD plus 18x dual-layer dvd burner
for €300 - that's $420 about.
Same at 6000+, with separate GFX (GF8500)
and doublesized hd/ram would be ~50% more.
Motherboards have gigabit LAN and 5.1 sound

$300-400 for a new computer is a little low. Check the Dell site and you will find them beginning at about $450-500.

The specs that you have listed (1.8 ghz processor and a 6 gig hard drive) are about two years behind what is currently a law end PC. You will have a hard time finding a new one that slow and with the small of a hard drive. But if you really want a 2 year old computer for $300, try e-bay.

I'm sure you can. Windows XP (or Vista) is on all PCs these days. 1.8GHz is about the slowest you'll find, and most are 2.5 to 3.0GHz. Most have RAM that's at least 1GB. All have the remaining specs or better. You can find computers that meet your needs at Best Buy, Circuit City, or Fry's, but you'll probably pay $450 (plus tax).

Keep your eyes on newegg.com

Also, Walmart usually has decent towers from eMachines for around that price and you can sell the display to buy more goodies to soup it up if you want.
