I've been swimming since i was 4 and If i was you i would give it a go as it is fun to do and can come in handy. Go to your local swimming pool and ask about lessons don't be embarrased if the people your learning to swim with are younger than you at least you will be giving it ago. I know people who are 30+ and can't swim!

No. People who can't swim can't swim. They might survive by dogpaddling - maybe - but people often drown after being pushed into deep water by someone who imagined everyone can swim, they just don't know it,etc. It's very dangerous.

That IS how I learned to swim. I was in a fishing boat with my uncle, and he threw me out and told me to swim to the shore. Then he told me to be sure to watch out for water moccasins. You can bet your sweet bippy that I swam real quick for a 5 year old with no experience.
I did take some lessons after that, but that was my start.

when i was younger and couldnt swim i was out jumping off of a small pier onto a raft until my cousin took it away from me. i guess he thought i could swim and i was just short enough that the water was over my head. i learned to swim that day. to this day i am still skiddish of deep water and i can swim now.

No. Most people would panic and drown. The only exception would be if they're was something they could hold on (edge of pool, raft, etc.). Then, they could stay in there until they learn without drowning!

actually, my son sort of learned that way..
at 4, he took his "swimmies" off and his ball fell in the pool and thinking he still had them on, he jumped in the deep end. I freaked, but he paddled his azz to the side with a quickness...he's only 9 now and he's received several medals for swimming :)

They might learn to swim, OR they would get tired of trying and drown.

no....people die all the time in that situation. Some people might learn, but others are just not capable of swimming no matter how hard they try.

I wouldn't 'push' it (pardon the pun)!!
