According to the book, "Weeds of the West" the fruit of cats ear have spiked thistles on them. It is called a false dandelion., Use a herbacide and spray them; then next spring get a pre-emergence.

If you want to be organic then simply get a pair of riggers gloves which are heavy leather gloves (avaiable from bunnings very cheaply and long lasting) and a sharp knife and run the knife under and around the weed at about 45degrees ( this way way you cut off the root nice and deep) and throw it in the bin so you don't spread seed.I do all my weeding this way (except for nutgrass) as it is quick and easy and i avoid using sprays.

cats ears don't have thorns - it is similar to a dandelion and is used in cooking. are you sure it is not cats claw? that one has three or 4 thorns at the base that look like a cats claw and are extremely painful.

anyway, try some white vinegar or soapy water. many times that will work or get some good leather gardening gloves and weed it out. I have some thorny thistle like stuff and that is what I have to do because nothing seems to kill them.

I haven't heard of cats ears, but I've used roundup to get rid of many horrible weeds in my yard. It's not organic, but neither is rocket fuel!
