Edit: I found the above answerer's source for her, wherein the author says:
"A recent study reveals that alcohol-impaired drivers cost American taxpayers $21 - $24 billion dollars per year. According to a recent National Geographic report, alcohol abuse costs American society $136 billion and 65,000 lives annually."
http://ezinearticles.com/?Drunk-Driving-Accidents&id=275414
However I don't find that very credible as the author himself cites no source.
"A recent study"...is not a verifiable source (nor is "Google.")

Drunk driving does not cost the taxpayer anything. The government's spending money on things associated with drunk driving are what cost the taxpayer money. There is an important difference you are overlooking. I've never heard of a drunk driver taxing me.

The Laws have pretty much shifted to put the burden onto the offender...they pay for most of everything plus extra for education of everybody else...DUI these days isnt a laughing matter....you would have to look at each states .GOV website for their own info...you cant lump it all in under 1 heading..also try MADD's website

Trust me, the offenders pay for everything. Those convicted of dui's are fined to the hilt to pay for everything. Accidents, I'm not sure. Insurance companies are likely involved, but other than first responders (cops, firemen), I'm hesitant to think it's a lot.

Estimated to cost Taxpayers $21 to $24 billion dollars per year.
to the person below: I googled the question, and on one of the "answers", it was right there. So Google WAS my source. But my apologies to not being as intellectually superior as yourself. Hope that you find a better way to spend your life than judging others and their errors. . .
