do not do it. star buying companies are complete scams. you cannot buy a star or get a star named after you. it is astronomers job to name stars. the only way you could name a star is if you discover it.
again. YOU CANNOT BUY A STAR, ANY SITE THAT SAYS YOU CAN IS A SCAM!
this is taken directly from starregistry.com
# Q: Am I buying the star?
# A: No. We do not own the star, so we cannot sell it to you.
This is like adopting the star. This star is associated with that special someone. It is something you can point at to know that there is something special out there for you.
# Q: Will the scientific community recognize my star name?
# A: No. We are a private company that provides Gift Packages. Astronomers will not recognize your name because your name is published only in our Star catalog. We periodically print a book called Your Place in the Cosmos © which lists the stars that we have named.

You may want to name a star after your girlfriend or wife but I can tell you it is a total scam. Those names are not official in any way. Save some money simply print up a plaque with the name and give as a gift. This would carry the same weight as the ones you buy.

It's a cute gesture - especially if he knows where it's located and can point it out to her. And, as to who can name a star, one would have to ask what gives the International Astronomical Union more of a right to name celestial objects than anyone else. For the most part, they're a group of astronomers while the star registry group (and its customers) that named a star after your friend is just a different group. I guess the only real difference is one group is bigger than the other and recognized by more people. I think the IAU is probably recognized by more people right now, but I guess if enough people decide to recognize the group that named a star after them, then eventually the star registry group would be recognized by more people.

You can't really but a star, because nobody owns them. You can't sell what you don't own. And those companies who name a star after you for a price are not official. They will give you a nice certificate, but it is not official. No astronomer will use your name for that star.

It's a SCAM. Just print a star map and circle a star and say you got it for them you can do that for free. they don't own the star so they can't sell it.
