Religion has corrupted human society into being nice and following the rules that leaders put up. The World's leaders have used religion as a system of control for thousands of years, in fact every culture throughout time has had religion to control their own people. There is a lot more to my theory, but this is just the beginning.

In a very real sense, religion has formed society's morals for thousands of years!

Sexy Eyes, keep in mind, they used to force religion down on people thousands of years up till about 1800 or so, maybe a little later

sorry, it gets society to be nice and obedient, I guess you could say, not sure if that is the right word to use.

Yes, society does seem much nicer and a lot more obedient than they were back before the first civilizations started in the Middle East and elsewhere in that part of the world

So how do human beings develop morality, or what is good and what is bad? When do you believe that started?

No, I don't agree. Maybe fundamentalist religion has been ONE of the things to cause corruption in society. But, it's a generalization to say that religion, and ONLY religion, has corrupted this world. Yes, in some parts of the world, people have abused religion to beat others into submission. But, the key word here is "abused", as in they've misused religion for their own gain. Blame people, not religion. Why is it that religion is blamed for everything that's wrong in this world? A woman's husband leaves her- oh, blame religion! And, where has human society been corrupted into being nice??! Does society look completely "nice" to you? If only that could happen. And, would that be so horrible?

Even dictators have only so much control over society. People are pretty much going to do what they want to do. If it takes a lot of work to do something, people probably won't do it for long. It's a lot easier to be nice than to be evil. People are usually evil when they're bored, pushy, or just plain old don't agree with something.
As a rule, I don't know how people can be corrupted "into being nice". Following rulers is what we humans want to do. We love freedom, but we also want to be followers. We don't want to do things on our own. We're lazy creatures. We, in America, put up leaders to follow. WE pick the leaders. If WE didn't pick the leaders, WE shouldn't have to follow what they wanted us to do. But, since WE pick the leaders, WE're obligated to do one of two things - 1) do what they want us to do 2) kick them out of office and elect new officials.
As for your seeming disdain for all things religious, that, in itself, is a religious statement. So, whether or not you agree with religion, preaching against it is still a religious statement. As someone else pointed out, Atheism is a religion against all gods, not just THE God. As you so eloquently stated, "every culture throughout time has had religion". We humans need that - it is ingrained within us.
Here's my stand on religion: Religion is bad. Many people know this - even non-Christians. The thing is that most people confuse true Christianity as a religion, not a spiritual life-style. Even some Christians are confused as such!
So, while religion may be pushed down some people's throats by their leaders, that doesn't mean that all leaders are bad, or that all leaders will do that. While our laws are similar to the ten commandments, that doesn't mean that our laws are based on that, even though our country was initially created as a means of getting away from the establishment in order to have the freedom of worship as the people wanted to do. Do you think that before the ten commandments were issued that people thought it was okay to steal? Do you think they thought it was okay to lie? Do you think they thought it was okay to have sex with someone else's wife? Do you think they thought it was okay to murder someone? Of course not! Laws about these things were decreed long before the ten commandments were given to Moses by God. These are things that we humans have inherent within us! It doesn't take religion to know that those things are bad! It doesn't take God to know that those things are bad! But, because we know they're bad, that is why we have the laws we have, not just because "religion" tells us to do that.

I disagree with that statement because every society, organized or not, has religion. From Pigmy's to Amazons Even in Cuba the official religion is Atheist.
Religion started out as a good base line for structure in society and eventually became corrupted. It was never intended to control or manipulate. BTW how can one be corrupted into being nice? Are you saying you don't want to be nice?
America as we know it was founded on Christianity. That's were we get out laws and rules of society from. Tho shalt not kill, commit incest, adultery, etc. If these rules were not in place we would live in a lawless society (much like Sodom and Gomorrah)
Your anger or discontent against religion seems to be placed in the wrong direction. Or are you angry at politicians who use religion as a political platform?
A Loving Christian
PS This is in the wrong category you want R&S not P&S.

Yes somewhat. But also keep in mind that nobody is forcing anyone to believe in religion. Like me I just believe in God and that's it. Also for a while I have been saying some of the things you posted. Yea true. So then yes I do agree with your statements. Now when are you going to post more of your theory?

Mostly agree. Religion is a means of controlling the population and has been used as such for a very long time. However, it has nothing to do making society be nice.
