Random weird thing. It is a little long, but bear with me.

After church let out this afternoon, I noticed that traffic was bad, so I tried to kill time by wondering around aimlessly in the lobby looking the books and other materials that were laying about. I didn’t see anyone that I knew right away (it was a big church) so I just kept strolling around smiling at random people and looking at books. I noticed that a particular girl kept looking at me, so naturally I looked back at her every time that we crossed paths. Eventually one of the people in her little group came up to me and said, “Do you have a problem?” It seemed like an odd question, so I said something to the effect of, “Why? Is there a problem?” This person said, “Why are you following my friend around?” I said, more or less, “I was not aware of following your friend anywhere.” This person retorted, “Well, you are making her uncomfortable,” and then got nervous and ran away just as I was trying to ask a question.

…as to just whom was uncomfortable, and what specifically was I doing that was so objectionable to this person.

So now this other person, the one who spoke to me, is looking at me in a weird way, and ducking into the bookstore to avoid any further contact (see keeps looking out through the glass to see what I’m going to do).

Lest you think that I’m describing adolescent behavior, these people seem to be in their late 20s to early 30s.

What was this all about? It is not just church people who act this way; I’ve encountered vaguely similar situations here and there over the years in random locations with random people, so no anti-religious answers, please.

Now that I think about it a little more, it is possible that she was trying to make some other guy jealous. Some really big guy in her little group looked at me and smiled. I thought that he was just being friendly, but it is possible that he was laughing at one of us.

Teenagers and people who never grew up use their friends to be messengers. And frankly, those people need to be ignored.

It sounds like she does have a problem, but it's hers and not yours. My thought is that for some reason she may have found something about you that unnerved her and when you looked back her, that weirded her out more. It sounds like you didn't do anything intentional so just brush it off. Some people are just too paranoid and caught up in themselves. Maybe she thought you were scoping her out, which made her uncomfortable, but again that's a sign that she could be self absorbed.

Hm. Well either you are coming off much differently than you describe yourself here, or you have some very strange people living around your town. I wouldn't worry about it. If you are as innocent as you say, you've nothing to worry about at all. Maybe this girl was just paranoid.

It may be as simple as the eye contact.

You mentioned that you looked back at her every time your paths crossed. It may have been that that "spooked" her.

No worries :)
