They, the British, were fighting because we, the upstart United States, were revolting (hence the name of the war) against British rule, and wanted our independence.

Yo looneyLady--
The Brits were trying to kick colonial butt to put down a situation that King George found revolting !!
The British Empire had "establilshed" the colonies and considered them property of the crown -- and had commenced taxing the bloody hell out of the people to support the monarch's feed for greed !! The people being taxed found this to be VERY taxing indeed and decided to BE revolting ---- and they were !!
An all out war ensued and the Brits underestimated as to exactly HOW revolting the Americans could actually BE --- and got their collective butts whipped !!
This is just another in a long line of reasons why many in the U K find the Americans absolutely REVOLTING to this very day !!!

And, by-the-way --- mule is just another name for dumb@ss
--- she evidently read some VERY odd books on this subject
for Lincoln was President during the Civil War -- there was NO President OF the USA in the Revolution !!!

The British considered the United States a British colony. They wanted to be able to tax Americans and prevent independence. The colonists finally decided that they wanted independence. They dumped a shipment of British tea into the Boston harbor rather than pay the taxes on it. They said, "No taxation without representation". Skirmishes started happening between the colonists and the British soldiers, ultimately leading to battles, and then the war.

We were "theirs." We held property claimed by them and that property was supported and protected by their armies, navies, and politicians. We had resources like lumber and tobacco and things we made perhaps and we were their growing enterprise and concern. They had watched us develop from a wilderness and were hoping to see big returns in their investment of money and military muscle. We felt we were being treated like a step-child. The citizens in England were not taxed as much I believe, that made us resentful. We had less amenities of the English citizen, but we were expected to work harder to get less. We also saw the beginnings of our future prospects being great and didn't like the British sucking on us like a parasite when we like second-class citizens in their eyes. maybe we didn't mean to break away completely at first. We threw some temper tantrums and instead of them softening and recognizing our anger and resentment as legitimate, they stomped on us harder and treated us even worse, to which then we probably started to outright consider rebellion and altogether sever our ties with a country that wouldn't give us our proper dues.

You'll come up with a lot of reasons in the answers, but don't forget that King George was a pretty stupid megalomaniac.
