I'm only 13, but there are so many things I want to learn. I want to learn how to paint, and how to make pottery, I also want to learn how to dance (ballet), and to play a musical instrument (I love piano!)... Problem is, my mother is a single parent and we can not only not afford lessons, she works nights and I have school and am also on Probation. What can I do? There are so many things I want to learn and explore, but I can't. =(

What can I do?

Did you say Probation? is that another term for being on restriction?
you have a whole life ahead of you thats great you are ambitious and eager to explore your talents however even if you had the money you wouldnt be able to fit balet piano pottery painting and school in one week there is no way you would be able to get to your fullest potential with each favorite pick just one at a time. and set realistic goals for your self.. you can baby sit you can wash neighbors cars on the weekend. when i was 12 i cleaned a neighbors house I made 50.00 each time i cleaned her home, I would run for grocerys for my elderly neighbor i did honest things to make money.. since my mother was a single mom of 5 kids I use to sneak money in her purse so she wont be broke!
anyways take your time focus on 1 thing ok i think that is awesome you wanna be independent.

Oh, me too!
There are so many things that I want to do, but can't because my family doesn't have that much money to spend. I can understand your frustration. You can always learn when you get older, but usually you don't have as much free time, as when you're young.

I tried violin in the fifth grade, but struggled to keep up with my homework, so I had to quit. I was really mad that I did that because I could have gotten really good if I had practiced, but then I might have struggled in school.

When I got to middle school, I tried volleyball, but I wasn't very good at that either. My coach made me feel like a failure!

Then when I got to high school I took a ceramics class, I really liked it because it was cheap. I learned how to use the wheel, but I'm still learning. It's fun!

You could try out for sports, or practice drawing. Just don't give up if something doesn't work out at first, like I did. There are so many things that I could have done, but missed because I thought that I would never get good. I used to be a terrible drawer, but now I've gotten better.

My best suggestion is to have your mom get you a pass to the YMCA. If your mom is considered low income, you can get the pass at a really good price. Not only that, but those who are low income qualify for two free programs a quarter. So, you could take a ceramics or art class and ballet or gymnastics. They usually offer quite a few different classes. Your probation officer will probably be happy that you are getting involved in things. Go to www.ymca.com and then use their zip code finder to find the one closest to you. Good luck!

As I see it, you have three or four options:

1) see if there are free or low-cost classes nearby

2) Find someone who will let you be a volunteer worker in exchange for classes - pottery studios always need someone to sweep up dried clay, etc.

3) You seem to have pretty free access to a computer, judging by your answer stats. There are many free computer programs that will teach you lots and lots and let you be artistic. Try Apophysis (free) for fractal art or google "fractal art". Download dogwaffle 1.2 (free) for a real computer art painting program.

Learn to program. Learn Linux. Earn money by installing Linux on other peoples computers.

4) go to library, take out art books. Buy colored pencils and a drawing pad, start doodling. Learn from books. Teach a class at the library on basic art.

you can take classes from your school, you'll be going to high school in a year or so, schools offer piano, art, and dance programs for free because they are graded, but since you have drive your be sure to succeed :)

make a list of what you want most and if it works out, just do one at a time and see if you like it, if so then stick with it
