I think motive is a part of being moral. You are correct in using the word "acting as" in the sense of pretending.
Most people have been trained by social pressure since they were small children to behave. As adults, this training comes through as feelings. They feel bad when they are dishonest, for example. But feelings make a poor foundation for morality. We have no moral obligation to obey a feeling.

I stay moral because everyone else usually acts pretty mean to others. I do it to show that there are still some "odd" people around.
