Amino acids are named arbitrarily; there is no rhyme or reason. For example, asparagine was named so because it was first found in asparagus. If you're talking about naming short peptides, they are named from the N terminus to the C terminus.

Amino acids have a general formula R-CH-NH2
I
COOH
Depending on the Chemical composition of "R"they are classified as Aliphatic-strait chain-Aliphatic branched chain,Alicyclic,Aromatic,sulphur containing Amino acids
P.S:-Sulphur is missing in the main Post.-COOH should come below CH
