My 01 Altima runs great but when I have to stop for a red light or stop sign, it acts like it wants to cut off. Almost as if it isn't getting fuel to the engine. I had the plugs and plugwires changed but it didn't help. I have to put the car into neutral and have one foot on the brake and on the accelerator. I am thinking it could be the converter? I am scared to drive it much but I need my car! The check engine light is on and has been for a long time. I went to a mechanic about it (before this problem) and he stated the chip itself was bad. Would think have anything to do with it? Anyone have any suggestions?

I had the codes read once before when my light first came on at Advanced Auto. The guy there said it had something to do with my exhaust. But that it wouldn't hurt me to drive it. Then I had my oil changed by a mechanic and he checked it on a machine too. He stated the chip itself was bad and that I needed a new chip. Something about it kept popping up different codes? They have tried to cut the light off but it comes right back on. Would the light have something to do with the way it's running? I plan to get the chip as I know my car won't pass inspection with the light on. The thing is the cost is SO high. I know I have to get it though and I will. I just this problem fixed first because it will at least a month before I pay for the chip.

Vacuum leak or a leaking Fuel Pressure Regulator would be the first on my list of things to check. Both are common issues on this model. Barring that, have it scanned again by someone who knows what they are doing.

Go to auto zone or similar auto parts store and get the codes read for the check engine light. How can you ase certified etc. 20 years service tech. Make all these unfounded guesses when the statement wes made that the mil was on ? NEVER replace any part till you know the problem. Memorize that statement. When you get the codes post them here and we will try a little diagnostics. Stay away from dealers and never let anyone that says I THINK IT MIGHT BE---touch your vehicle. If they can't tell you whats wrong get out, no guessing games.

1; Fuel filter needs to be changed.

2; Catalytic Converter clogged and back pressure is messing up the o2 sensor.

3; Throttle Body and/or Injectors are dirty.

All of the above can cause the changing read outs.

Miss On your nissan you should never let any check engine light stay on for so long. Also why would you take your car to any nissan dealer?A good independant auto shop would be better for you because you won't have to deal with the head games and run arounds with these dealers. If you are patient enough you will have your e mail concerns answered by a competant auto mechanic that deals with all japanese cars.I don't own a japanese car so I cannot help you.SORRY .

Sounds like a vacuum leak, with a small paint brush apply water to all the vacuum hoses, if it runs smooth you have a leak in one of the hoses.. Check your air filter cartridge too.

You need to get the car scanned for codes, but it sounds like a vacuum leak, or a bad idle air control valve.
