Lol, using terms like "y'all" and "my neck of the woods" makes me wonder just _where_ your neck of the woods is at....
America is a very diverse nation, and that is one of our strongest points. Racially, intellectually, culturally, culinarily, religiously. Diversity isn't good for any feel-good political-correctness reason, but because diversity is the spice of life. Our diversity also gives us a huge advantage in innovation and research.
I live in a college town in central Illinois (Champaign-Urbana). In-town, we are very metropolitan, though if you drive out of town 20 minutes in any direction, odds are you'll be surrounded by nothing but corn & soybean fields as far as the eye can see.
In town, there is practically no racial strife amongst the college students. People of different races hang out with each other freely, and interracial dating doesn't get a second look (or thought). Except for a few niche academics who keep insisting on bringing up race either because that's what they've made a career of or because they're stuck in a "white men are evil" mindset, most people around here seem to have put race behind them.
Out of town things get rural pretty quickly, and it's not hard to notice that the populations there are like 99% white. My wife is a brown-skinned Sri Lankan and one time we went to a fair way out in the boonies, and this little kid who was obviously a local, looked at her like she was a space alien. Not in a racist way, but he sure looked like he had never seen a non-white before.
Still, even in the boonies a lot of people have gotten the message that racism is out, and even the subtle racism of the past is not looked kindly upon.
There is still racism out there for sure, especially in some parts of the South and in some inner cities--basically, in places that have a very high concentration of just one race. But overall I think the US has made tremendous strides in race relations over the past half-century.
