Stay in school, and finish your degree first. Your classes will give you more opportunities to write, direct and work on student projects, meet and network with others in your field and get experience, and the degree will give you a credential -- and personal contacts -- that a lot of other wanna-be filmmakers won't have.

You're in an extremely competitive field. There are thousands of other starry-eyed aspiring filmmakers out there hoping to become the Next Big Thing in movies and television -- and *all* of them are great at directing actors and writing. Or at least they think they are.

I think you should be making short films while you're in school. Enter them in Film Festivals anywhere you can and see if you win anything or gain any contacts from that. During the summer if you have a full length feature finihed consider trying to shoot it. Use the contacts you've made from showing your shorts to find backing for your feature. Don't forget to protect your work. Regitser everything with WGA.org and the Library of Congress. As soon as you think anything may turn into a big deal, try getting a literary agent. WGA has a list of them online.

good luck!

I do not know requirements but one semester in my mind does not a writer make. You may catch a lucky break but you should know what to do to break in.
