The federal government has been contaminated by money and influence from lobbyists, specifically from huge corporations. The system is very sick right now and I don't know if it can be cured.

The problem with centralization of all sorts is that it necessarily cannot respond to particular needs as well as local governance can. Thus, in extreme circumstances (say when a Hurricane hits) or if you have preferences out of the mass of groups (say rural healthcare), the centralization of government responds with difficulty. The federal government of the U.S. simply govers too many issues to do all of them well. The best system would be a purely local governance arrangement in terms of government services and efficiency; the problem then would be multiple jurisdictions with different rights, standards, taxes, and systems. There is thus a need to have standards and rights centralized but in terms of government efficiency local governance is best.
So finally to get the answer to your question: Is such distrust justified? Yes, because the federal government is going to be inefficient no matter what. Should this distrust lead to abandoning the federal govenrment? Probably not if we take the ethical demands of equality and fairness seriously.

Because the more laws the federal government passes, the less freedom individuals have.
Yes, I think such distrust is warranted, and will become more apparent to everyone over time.
The biggest problem is when you mix a growing federal government with advanced technology. The feds are turning into an invincible police state and are probably nearly unstoppable.

You should always view the government with skepticism. History tells us that your own government poses the greatest danger to your life and freedom not foreign threats. Americans have been lulled into complacency because we have maintained a stable democracy for over 200 years, but if we let down our Gard we could lose it. It is not the size of the budget that matters, but the power over our lives.

There is a theory that says governments must be periodically renewed by revolution. (Be it upheaval of the people, or political reform)
I think it is that NO government, on any sort of large scale (and therefore with any sort of power given to one person or a smaller group of people) is trustworthy.
Lastly, I'd say American distrust of their government is warranted, as it's recently made a habit of violating our basic rights.

I think I might have to agree with Razor Jim on this. The Democratic and Republican parties have made a big gap between them.A third party may very well fill that gap in,and will help get everybody in congress to learn their place and get some work done.

The government no longer listens to the people. We have to change that. One way would be to elect an independent president. That would really shake up the two parties and shock them back to reality.

The current federal government?
The one that spies on its own people and tortures people who have not been convicted of any crime?
Gosh - I wonder why.
