could be and most likely a bad head gasket.

does it smell like burnt antifreeze, if so it is your head gasket.

Check your oil, if thiere is a whitish color on the dipstick it is your head gasket for sure and could possibly even be a cracked head.

you should have this checked out asap, you do not want to warp the heads, big bucks if you do

Good luck hope this helps.

It may not be smoke, it could be steam caused by a bad gasket or a crack in the block or cylinder head. Check the water level in the radiator to see if its low and check the oil, if a milky white substance shows up on the dipstick it means that water from a crack or leak has gotten in. Also the engine burning water along with the fuel will clean away soot from the exhaust pipe. These are just a couple of hints to look for to see if water is somewhere it shouldn't be. Good luck.

Check your coolant level.. If it smokes badly and it is coolant being burned, your level should be going down.. It can be a blown head gasket, intake manifold gasket on some engines, or it could even be a hole right through one of the cylinders. A compression tester will come in handy to figure out which side of the engine to look at if it is a V-6 or V-8 etc. Big $ and likely a few days to fix.

Is it a automatic? It could be oil dripping down from the transmission onto the exhaust. causing the smoke. In this case it will make it seem like it is coming from your exhaust.
black smoke is too much petrol,blue/grey means your rings are gone in your engine, white smoke most of the time is caused by oil leaks from transmission or engine.
try looking at the rear main seal on the gearbox if your car is auto.
good luck

it wont be oil, oil burns black for a start.

it could be water or coolant being burned. check your fluid levels first off. including your oil, if there is a crack in the heat exchanger either your coolant or oil level will have dropped and the other risen.

if not then it could be your head gasket or cracked water jackets, both of which are not easy jobs to repair so get down to a garage.

last thing it might be is burning fuel, which actually seems the most likely as when you go faster, your fuel pump works faster and you said thats when the smoke gets bad?

Put your hand over the end of the exhaust pipe and see if it is steam--your hand will get wet quickly. If it is a black color ring on the palm of your hand --it is oil---better use a rag instead of just the skin---if you do it wrong it can hurt---use a paper towel folded over and see if it is either wet or if it is oil burning.

could be something in the engine, even an animal. thats what happened to our car T_T
either way you should probably check out the engine, under the hood, and if you don't see anything probably get it checked, smoke can become a fire after a while (seen it happen o.o; while someone was driving) Dunno if I'm much of a help but i tried ^^;

My guess would be leaky valve stem seals. Good luck on getting your car fixed!
