Scupting plaster is plaster of paris, mixed with water and poured in a rough mold - maybe even a box like a milk carten and carved when firm. The best place to buy it, most economical, is from a pottery or ceramics supply firm which will sell you 25 or 50 pounds for much less than buying it 8 pounds at a time at Michaels or Hobby Lobby. There are various plasters available, some of which are better for molds and others for carving.
It is heavy, so don't pay to ship it too far.

Plaster is made from heating gypsum at high temps. Usually sculptors though buy it by the bag or tonne in dry powder form. If you want to do something small you can use plasterboard adhesives and gapfillers.
