i do try to keep her very clean. she just got a new cage with about 3 stories and started getting a little territorial. i was told she needs to be spayed but could this odor be a territorial thing. the cage smells like body odor almost. help, yuck :(

She could have a Urinary Infection that cause's odor.

Or

The odor you smell might be from her having GI Stasis (Blocked Bowel) which cause's gas. GI Stasis basically means your bunny’s intestines have become immobile.

Take her to a Vet; GI Stasis means your bunny is in a potentially LIFE OR DEATH situation, so be prepared to take swift action.

Alway's be safe and take her to a Vet. just to make sure!

Good Luck,

Rob

There's a couple of reasons it could be.

1.) Diarrhea - rabbits will give off a funky odor if they have diarhhea. Check her underside and see if it is all messy.

2.) Vent disease - if a rabbit does have vent disease that can give off a bad odor. Vent disease isn't too common, so it may not be that. A rabbit with vent disease will normally have a milky white substance coming out of the rabbit's vents.

3.) The rabbit's vents may be dirty (different than vent disease). Clean the rabbit's vents with a Q-tip. They are on either side of where you sex the rabbit and look lik slits.

4.) Not enough ventilation around your rabbit cage or the cage not being kept clean enough allowing ammonia to build up around the cage.

5.) Urine on the pelt of the rabbit. Some males (bucks) will spray pee and they can spray pee on to the rabbit next door or if the cage has solid walls, then on the walls and then they rub against the walls and get the pee on theirself. You'll feel a sticky dirty feel to the fur if the fur has been soiled with pee.

Rabbits do not have a fowl odor if you keep them clean. Rabbits create a lot of waste and need to be cleaned quite frequently. I change mine out every two days. You should at least be changing yours once a week.
