Yes, I know quite a few not only adults, but also teens who cannot read. I don't bother them about it because I am sure they are sensitive about it. They live in the back country in Virgina. When my husband and I used to drive out from the city and visit we would read their mail and help pay their bills.
We have moved so others have taken over the job. It is sad because it has been generation after generation that just don't really seem to care about an education.
A lack of education makes for a very bad family foundation. They are all very disfunctional on all levels. Abuse, violence, drugs, alcohol, in family rapes and births and a lot of other ugly things. I do not interfere because I know not to. They know I do not condone it but they respect me for who and what I am. They call me the book smart girl.
I still love them. They are good people who know nothing else. You cannot judge hundreds of years of wrong doing without intervention when others in the public eye have known it has been going on.

I know a lot of adults that can't read, I'd say at least a third of the Tribe that lives near our home town can't read, and no, they seem like they could care less.

My niece married a young man that couldn't read. He also has a speech impediment. They now have three children, 20, 12 and 7 and own about 24 rent houses and he makes about $25 and hour doing auto body work. They get along just fine
He has tried to take remedial reading classes, but he just can't get it. He's not stupid, he just can't get the reading.

Yes I do but they compensated by learning a lot of other stuff so they do not have to read in front of others. But if put on the spot they tend to walk away or just take the paper with them and have some one else read it to them.

Yes I do. He is a good friend of mine that used to rent from my Mother. It hasn't bothered him any because he is the best heavy equipment operater in Northwest Arkansas. He has a checking account and he would always bring the check to my mother so she could fill it out. Lack of education has never hurt him because he is so loaded with common sense, and talent.

Yes, I do, and he has learned how to be clever about it so no one would know he's illiterate. He's 72 now and still can't read or write but gets by just fine.
