Because there's two sides to the coin! In History, everyone is biased. Ignorance is a big factor, one might not know that he exploited the natives and that he wasn't the first to land in North America. Some decide that the positives outweigh the negatives or vise versa. As a aspiring historian, look at both sides, always, and analyze it as you see it. But don't go to extremes by completely ignoring one side.

There are two reasons. The first reason is that the man was viewed in different ways in his own day. Was he a visionary explorer? Was he a mean person who wanted to garner power in the New World for himself? Was he a harsh captain, driving his crews? Did he gain great wealth for Ferdinand and Isabella, which then went to Charles V and Philip II?

The second reason is that he is viewed in different ways today. Did he victimize native Americans? Did he destroy native American civilizations that had gone on for 1000's of years and could have gone on longer? Or did he introduce the good of western civilization to the America's, which resulted in vibrant counrries like Canada, the U.S., and Mexico?

The Vikings found Canada and Columbus found the Carribean. Its also possible that 'Alantians', Egyptians, and such may have been their first. But thats if you belive all those old stories (meaning that last sentence, the Vikings and Columbus really did find those places).
