There's a passage in one of the Douglas Adams books where this truck driver is always under a cloud, and he has like 50 different kinds of rain that he has identified. He has descriptions based on the size of the drops, the intensity, the angle, the wind, etc. Its pretty cool.

Walking along I feel what appears to be an increase in wind, sounds like drums and now light across the sky. With the wind comes a moisture creating dampness in my hair, wetting my clothes covering me all over. I increase my walking speed and hurry to a dry place for a hot cup of coffee.
