In order to be a Top Contributor, you must have at least 10% of your answers, best answers.

Edit:There is no set level of answers , points , level or best answer percentage to meet to become a top contributor

A Top Contributor is a member of the Answers community who has shown that they are knowledgeable in a particular category. Each Answers user can be a top contributor in up to three categories.

The top contributor badge is dynamic , you earn it or lose it depending on your recent participation in a particular category. The more actively you contribute, the more likely you will earn a badge. Just like featured users or category leaders, it's another way to feature community members who might otherwise be overlooked.

You gain the badge by actively posting decent and detailed answers to a specialist topic. The more your post gains positive marks , the more likely it is you will get a badge

No one knows the formula yahoo uses to calculate the standard to met a top contributor , however we know all Top contributors supply a lot of high quality answers , and therefore this implies it is a mixture of points , best answer percentage and level.

Well I don't know what the criteria are to be named as a Top Contributor, but I do bow to the amazing knowledge and the number of points some visitors have.I am sure many of your own postings are worthy of a Top Contributor so no doubt when you get back from the Big Apple you will have become one.Have a nice trip.
When the going gets tough, the tough go shopping.

It means you answered A LOT of question in just one category. Asking questions doesn't factor into the equation. TC's answer lots of questions.

don't think they ever said exactly how many best answers you need in a category to be a "top contributor." I suspect it varies from category to category depending on how popular the category is. Just pick a category that you're good in and answer A LOT of questions in that category and you, too, can be a "top contributor." Don’t believe people when they say “just answer 50 answers in 30 days” or stuff like that. Yahoo keeps it deliberately vague so they never promised an exact figure to anyone. It may, as I said, vary from category to category.

However, I have a rough idea of how long it takes to become a top contributor because a friend of mine just made it and she answered all her questions in only one (1) category for a month in order to earn that badge. She doesn’t log on as often as I do so that only amounted to about 85 answers but she made it. She had a 30% “best answer rating.”

It’s been said somewhere here on Yahoo that you need at least 10% of those answers to be “best answers.” It may take weeks of answering a lot in a category so be patient, Rome wasn't built in a day.

I read all those answers above mine.

I just wanted you all to know that I have a life. A very full life. I take care of my three grandsons every day, and being on Yahoo (mostly Seniors) is how I choose to spend some of my downtime from that.

To those who answered negatively, I would say your jealousy is showing. For those who answered factually, I congratulate you. If I could give any one of you that ugly orange badge under my avatar I would.

As you can see by the majority of the answers here, Shan, a top contributor might as well have "TARGET" written on their foreheads.

I think it means you give pretty worthwhile answers in a certain category and you seem to have some good knowledge and experience about that category worth sharing. (Best I can figure out) (I almost fell out of the chair when I got it..then did a screaming dance around the house afterwards!!) It's not about points..because I didn't have many..just worked my tail off on the category I was in..not having any hope of trying to get TC..just trying to help people the best I could.
