Actually, it was first used for the peso and we took it from them. At the time, them was Spain. After all, we were not having such good relations with England at the time. :-)

How it got to be the symbol of the peso, is a different question, on which there are two theories. (See the sources)

They use the same alphabet we do for the most part. We did have a lot of influence on the world.
