About half way through my cycle and before my period I get menstrual cramps in my lower back. All my sisters and friends get their cramps in the abdomin region, so I'm wondering if this is something that other women experience as well. Thanks ladies!

Yes -- I used to have terrible cramping in my back when I was still having a cycle (had hysterectomy 20 years ago). As a matter of fact, my labor during child birth was in my back. Oh! How painful. This was back in the "olden days" when we didn't have all the wonderful epidurals like today.

What I found relieved the back pain during a cycle was to lay a heating pad on the bed, place a towel over it to prevent burning my skin, lay on top of it with it positioned on my lower back, and turn the dial as high as I could stand it. Elevating your feet while lying down also helps.

I had that too. Im also a bigger girl, and have had a previous miscarriage and I was concerned. But my doc said as long as there is no extreme pain and no bleeding, its probably fine. The uterus, which is normally sloughing in a period about now, is being signalled to stay full and keep plumping out that lining to nest the baby. The hormones are kicking in to start stretching, protecting the egg, making room, a lot of things are going on. And its all normal. Its a good thing she is having a sonogram but be relieved that if it was an emergency, he would have scheduled the sonogram like 5 minutes ago and not in a weeks time. So its probably just caution. I think she is probably ok but she should take it easy, get pelvic rest, drink lots of water, eat well and dont lift anything heavy. Congratulations!!!! It should be fine, Im sure. Just think positively. EDIT: Please dont listen to Shannon M, Lauren G or Jorgey. Shannon M, if the baby had passed, she would be bleeding profusely and cramping. This is not the case. She has had a previous miscarriage and now she is nervous thats all. Jorgey, you arent helping either. Dont put that kind of stress on anybody. There is no pain, there is no blood, just pressure. That does not signal miscarriage. And Lauren G, yes she is overweight but so is most of America. How is she less of a mother because she is overweight? You are definitely getting a thumbs down from me!

Whenever I'm on my period I always get horrible back pains, almost worse than abdominal cramps. My mum and gramma are the same way. They have back pain too. I'd say it's probably pretty normal.

I get it every now and then, but I've found that exercise almost always prevents cramping. I'm not sure why that is, but I try to work out everyday just to stay fit, but it has the side effect of keeping the cramps away.

Yes it is normal and also most of my labor pains were also in the back so you may have that to look forward too also.

ya, I usually get lower back pains just before I start my period, and it is totally normal...if they are really bad, talk to your doctor and they may be able to perscribe something for it.
