I felt a push once, when a car almost hit me, and I they occasionally whisper things in my ear, which helped avoid car accidents

I believe that God does send his angels to watch over us. There was a time for me when I felt that an angel saved my life. It was winter and i was driving on the highway on sheer ice. I did a 360 on the ice and all of a sudden, it felt as if someone had put their hand on my car and stopped it right in the middle of the road. I thanked God for that.

I believe there is a whole lot more going on spiritually than most can see. Angel? God watching? Whatever the actual case is, I'm very grateful for it.
As the Gentleman said, we as friends, can be guardians for others too.

God has sent my guardian angel to protect me on a number of occasions. From a pack of dogs roaming my neighborhood to protecting me in my car in a very strong wind! The stories I could tell....

Guardian angels can be anything. From a supernatural being sent by God to watch over us or the people we call friends. They both shield us from harm.
Seems like you have experienced a miracle. :-)
