Hm, I thought it was the end of your last day.
It leads to some situations. On one of my jobs, they wanted to fire me, but couldn't, because they didn't have enough money to pay me. LOL.

I am not sure about 2 hours -- it sounds kind of quick. For sure it has to be no sooner than a few working days. If they give you the option of working a few more days and you take it, they can wait no later than your last day. Most companies write the check the same day you are laid off anyway as they want you to "disappear" as quickly and quietly as possible." However, if you quit on your on accord, the company waits until the pay period is over.

I haven't worked in California for more than 20 years, but at that time the State law required IMMEDIATELY.

Layed off is either 48 or 72 hours, I can't remember which.
