i don't believe lasorda ever did that.
a manager can not put himself to pitch or to bat or participate in a game, unless he is on the player roster as a player/manager.

pete rose was a player/manager in the late 80s.
he batted and managed, etc.

Yes and No, they have to be on the roster as a player. The last player/manager was Pete Rose. It is very rare that you see this anymore. It used to be common especially in the early days of baseball. Other managers who have done this is Frank Robinson, Joe Torre, Connie Mack and Cap Anson. I don't think Tommy Lasorda ever played at the same time he was a manager.

Lasorda may have done that in a preseason game or an exhibition game, although it's more likely that he tried his luck pitching. He was a pitcher in his career and often threw batting practice after he retired from active duty.

The others are correct -- a manager has to be on the active roster, and that's rather unusual now. 100 years ago, it happened all the time.

Lasorda did not do that. Lasorda only appeard in a few games in his short non-illustrious playing career.
A player can play and manage if he is on the active roster. As some have said already, Pete Rose was player/manager.
During Jose Oquendos playing career with the Cardinals, Whitey Herzog handed him the reigns a couple of times when Herzog had gotten tossed.

Only if they are a player-manager can the manager put themselves into the game, otherwise, NO!

Yeah, they used to be able to do that years ago, but not anymore. Besides most managers these days are in their late 40s to late 60s. Managers were alot younger a long time ago.
