Addendum: prehistoric is an adjective meaning (or relating to) things that existed in times before written history.
If you're not a fan of Douglas Adams, why bother posting? Just curious.
Hey this is for fun. There's nothing contentious about it.

This was in theTertiary phase. Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect just escaped on a time-travelling sofa. Ford soon pops up, but until then poor Arthur, presumably still in his his dressing gown, with a rabbit bone in his hair, has no one to talk to.
Sorry--I should have been less specific. I have so much of Adam's trilogy in 5 parts (giving a whole new meaning to "trilogy" :D ), committed to memory.
The mice is a good guess. They were more hostile than uncommuicative. They wanted Arhtur Dent's brain-literally.
Myabe I should delete this question and ask another less picky when I get over this flu and can concentrate better.
HINT: In Lerener&Lowes Paint Your Wagon, the lovelorn character portrayed by Clint Eastwood, sings "I talk to the _____, but they don't listen to me"
It's one of those. flora, not fauna, and certainly not human.
Arthur says, [paraphrasing] to this creature 'Well, just be that way, E _ _!"
Does that help or make it more confusing?
