past is gone and tomorrow is promised to no one. Thus, what we are left with is *now*. Nothing else exists, and thus nothing else is worth *living for*. Having said that, I try (and fail often) to live according to the three principles of Zen Buddhism:
1. infinite gratitude toward my ancestors
2. infinite respect toward my contemporaries
3. infinite responsibility to those who will follow me
World is like a huge bridge, cross it, but do not build your home on it. One who has hope for one meaningful moment in life shall have hope for eternity. The world exists for just such one moment. When you find it, spend it nobly and with the infinite in your heart, the rest is unknowable.
EDIT: American Patriot. thanks for calling me a lazy bum, but I am NOT on welfare. So do not worry about your tax dollars. They are safe. Wouldn't take a penny from the likes of you if I had to die in the next 30 seconds.
They ($) are safe. Served in VN with the 101st.
Opinions are like as*holes, everybody has one and they all stink.

no, because you won't be prepared for the possibilities, and some of the possibilities that do materialize require preparation. An example: you have a child who needs to get into a particular school, and it is necessary to apply to the school to get in. You need to do something about it NOW in preparation for tomorrow. Tomorrow will come.

Having said that, I think that in general, people do live too much for tomorrow. The moment at hand is all you truly have, and you are right, you don't know what will happen with tomorrow. So live in the moment, for the moment is gone as you breathe, but have tomorrow in your mind. Be aware of tomorrow, but live now.

Not only for today. Tomorrow's pretty likely to show up and we ought to do what we can to be ready.

But we should never forget to do some living everyday, so that we've not missed so much when the day comes that tomorrow doesn't.

I don't know about living ONLY for today. We still have to plan for our futures, even though we have NO idea whether or not we will even HAVE one. However, we DO have to live in the present moment, in order to just survive in our day to day lives. To live ALL of our lives FOR the future or IN the past denies us the ability to function in the here and now.

Those who only live for today are those lazy bums on welfare who REFUSE to work. I'm not talking about folks who CAN'T but about those who WON'T.
My opinion. You asked.

No! You take one day at a time and rejoice that you wake up each morning and aren't dead.
