You'd have to first explain what punished they have received that was cruel and unjust. From what I understand, they severely beat a person who would have died if not for intervention. My understanding of the law may be a little iffy since I am not a lawyer, but I believe that is what they call criminal behavior that can warrant incarceration. As is the case, their ethnic identity or skin colour is irrelevant.
