there was one i forget when it aired but it was marilyn monroe with burning crosses and it was either a pepsi or a coke commercial....i might be wrong though it was a LONG time ago

I can’t give you specific examples but I can suggest that commercials change with times. What is considered controversial now may have not been so 10 or 20 years ago or visa versa. Ever since sometime in the 80’s the political correctness crowd has probably changed the definitions of what they feel is controversial and If accepted by the public then it become so.
Search the internet for commercials dating back years and see if any of them strike your fancy.

Look up the "Daisy" commercial that President Johnson aired during the 1964 Presidential campaign. It only ran once, but it will be discussed forever. It played on people's fears that Barry Goldwater was much more likely to explode a nuclear bomb.

there was one a while back done by the conservative party that had the slogan "are you thinking what we're thinking"
At the time, I was thinking about biscuits. Surely it's just outrageous that a party running for government have nothing more important to think about than biscuits!
