And I was wondering what could be causing this and what I can do to prevent it. Thanks in advance.

moisture inside the oil cap can arise for a few reasons.if you do only short journeys is one them.if your cooling system is not functioning properly will also make this occur.then there is the scenario of headgasket failure.whre water gets into the oil through the leak.so to prevent it regularly change your oil at the intervals described in the maintenance schedule.keep antifreeze at correct mix.thermostats are a wearing out part and do require replacing.another item to inspect is the pcv valve.they do clogg up.simply wash out with engine cleaner.reinstall. and start up motor .check for oil leaks..if you intend to change the oil / filter.add some engine flush to flush out any sludge that has accumulated.

This indicates that either:

1. You are not changing oil often enough, or

2. You make a lot of short trips without allowing the engine to warm up thoroughly.

A thorough warm up or a few runs on the interstate will eliminate the moisture.

That is condensation, caused by the warm air from the crankcase meeting the cool moist air of your climate. You probably have condensation occuring at your exhaust also when it is cold and damp. A white vapor that looks like smoke. Nothing to worry about. When summer comes it will go away.

A little condensation is normal.
If your dipstick looks funny, then I'd be concerned.
