Stanford. By the way buckeyes its not Standford, its Stanford. The point spread was more. USC was higher rated than UM and does anyone actually think Stanford could have beaten App State that day? Therefore a much worse team beat a much better team in the Stanford USC game. Also it was not the first game of the season. USC had a multi year home win streak. UM was coming off a two game losing streak. As far as scholarship players, hell Notre Dame has lots of scholarship players. So what? The real question is which is the bigger upset...Stanford over USC or the 1969 upset of OSU by Michigan.

To be politically correct, Stanford was a 41 point under dog while Appalachian St. was a 32 point under dog. Appalachian St. is actually pretty good team in their division while Stanford is one of the worst teams in the Pac-10. USC loss to Stanford should not have happened. Satistically the USC loss to Stanford was a bigger upset. Regardless though, people will not acknowledge that because USC is the "best team in the land"

In my mind there is no question the Stanford win was a bigger upset. There are so many reasons: App St's style of play is suited for success against Michigan's defense. Stanford was playing without its starting QB. I think App State is clearly a better team than Stanford. The best teams in I-AA are better than a lot of I-A squads. And I think that USC is much better than Michigan.

This was the biggest upset ever in college football since they used point spreads. Vegas had Stanford as a 41 pt. underdog. Second biggest ever was the Syracuse upset over Louisville (37.5 pts). The App St line was not official in Vegas because they didn't take bets for this game, but outside vegas the point spreads were generally around only 28 pts.

Bottom line, App St could probably beat Michigan 3 times in 10 tries. I think that Stanford couldn't do it again if they tried 10 more times. Much bigger upset.

Grant it App St is a Div 1AA school, but they are the 2 time defending national champions. So they know how to win! Stanford has been on the lower tier of the PAC 10 for years, sort of like Duke football in the ACC but not as bad. Every year Stanford looks past football and to basketball. So Stanford beating USC(an NCCA powerhouse program every year) is the biggest upset!!!

Sorry, but it's Appalachian State, unlike what the Michigan sycophants will tell you. Stanford is a conference rival and was actually the last team to beat USC in the Coliseum before last night. Appalachian State, albeit a two-time national champion, isn't even in the same division as "mighty" Michigan and hadn't beaten a I-A team since 2000 when they beat a 2-9 Wake Forest.

stanford. they are terrible. Appalachian state is one of the top 3 teams in division 2 and a well coached, talented, cohesive team always has a chance against a bad team no matter how many star athletes it has. plus its stanford that would be like North texas beating Oklahoma (which beat them 79-10). Appalachian state has lots of current nfl football players in the league to and stanford doesnt. which shows who has the better football team. everyone puts too much stock in division two automatically being worse than a division 1 team

Depends on what you mean by "bigger." Appalachian State's upset was more difficult and unexpected (Stanford didn't have it easy by any means, but USC is definitely worse this year than they have been). Nevertheless, Stanford's upset was still very unexpected, and it will have much more of an impact on college football this year.

Hah.
Personally I think that Stanford had the bigger upset. I mean, they came and beat USC at home. Stanford!!? I mean, they're not exactly a football powerhouse, are they?

USC is just an overrated football team, and Washington exposed that last week. It's just that no one expected STANFORD to beat them....

LSU fans were going wild when they made that announcment in Death Valley!!!
