Comment based on the sentence given....
Whoever wrote or directed the horror movie was deeply concerned with what they included in the movie such as maybe blood or monstrous creatures...so they held back on this: being conservative to me means to stay within an accepted boundary, not going out on a limb....so however the movie was directed or written was so deeply conservative it caused people to react..whether positive or negative is not clear from your sentence.
