Hurt - Johnny Cash.

The original version was by Nine Inch Nails.

A quote from Trent Reznor (NIN) really sums up what a beautiful cover this is:

" I pop the video in, and wow… Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps… Wow. I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn't mine anymore… It really made me think about how powerful music is as a medium and art form. I wrote some words and music in my bedroom as a way of staying sane, about a bleak and desperate place I was in, totally isolated and alone. [Somehow] that winds up reinterpreted by a music legend from a radically different era/genre and still retains sincerity and meaning—different, but every bit as pure.[2]"

Reznor still occasionally refers to "Hurt" as "a song that isn't mine anymore."

on the turning away... pink floyd...even the lyrics make me well up.. for reasons im not going into...

On the turning away
From the pale and downtrodden
And the words they say
Which we wont understand
Dont accept that whats happening
Is just a case of others suffering
Or youll find that youre joining in
The turning away

Its a sin that somehow
Light is changing to shadow
And casting its shroud
Over all we have known
Unaware how the ranks have grown
Driven on by a heart of stone
We could find that were all alone
In the dream of the proud

On the wings of the night
As the daytime is stirring
Where the speechless unite
In a silent accord
Using words you will find are strange
And mesmerized as they light the flame
Feel the new wind of change
On the wings of the night

No more turning away
From the weak and the weary
No more turning away
From the coldness inside
Just a world that we all must share
Its not enough just to stand and stare
Is it only a dream that therell be
No more turning away?

Unchained Melody
Tell Laura I love Her
Endless Sleep
Heartbreak Hotel
Are You Lonesome Tonight
24 Hours to Tulsa
and on and on and on - If you can't cheer up then there are plenty of sad songs around, Why not go for something cheery like 'The wheels on the Bus' and do the actions, give yourself the giggles and be happy eh? Go on!

PS looking at references to more modern (except for Every Body Hurts - how I didn't list that I don't know)songs and singers I now feel extremely old and so I am going to crawl into bed after singing 'when I'm 64' by the Beatles - 'cos that is what I will be in April 08. booo hooo!

A very sad, poetic, and beautiful song is "Winter" by Tori Amos.

Here are the lyrics:

Snow can wait
I forgot my mittens
Wipe my nose
Get my new boots on

I get a little warm in my heart
When I think of winter
I put my hand in my father's glove

I run off
Where the drifts get deeper
Sleeping beauty trips me with a frown

I hear a voice
"Your must learn to stand up for yourself
Cause I can't always be around"

He says,
When you gonna make up your mind
When you gonna love you as much as I do
When you gonna make up your mind
Cause things are gonna change so fast

All the white horses are still in bed
I tell you that I'll always want you near
You say that things change.....my dear

Boys get discovered as winter melts
Flowers competing for the sun

Years go by and I'm here still waiting Withering where some snowman was

Mirror mirror where's the crystal palace
But I only can see the myself
Skating around the truth who I am
But I know dad the ice is getting thin

When you gonna make up your mind
When you gonna love you as much as I do
When you gonna make up your mind
Cause things are gonna change so fast

All the white horses are still in bed
I tell you that I'll always want you near
You say that things change my dear

Hair is grey
And the fires are burning
So many dreams
On the shelf

You say I wanted you to be proud of me
I always wanted that myself

He says
When you gonna make up your mind
When you gonna love you as much as I do
When you gonna make up your mind
Cause things are gonna change so fast

All the white horses have gone ahead
I tell you that I'll always want you near
You say that things change
My dear

It's a gorgeous song!!

No Need to Belong.
I don't remember the artist but it has no singing in it.
If you're into classical music listen to Chopin Polonaise #1 in C# minor. I'm learning it right now.
"The Fool on the Hill" by the Beatles is also really sad but good!

'If you have tears, prepare to shed them now'.

If you ever saw the David Lynch film 'Mulholland Drive', then you will remember the song sung by Rebekah Del Rio, 'Llorando'

It is a version of the original song 'Crying' by Roy Orbison. Have a listen to either the film version, lower down the page, or to her own recorded version.
