I only have 2 weeks left to live in my crappy house. There is a giant hole in the floor in the middle of the hallway. It is covered in carpet so there is no risk of falling through but when I step on it it sinks in. I asked my landlord to fix it 2 times in the last year. Now my time is almost up and I am afraid he is not going to fix it then charge me for "damaging" the place even though the hole was there when I moved in. (it was not a big hole at first but it has gotten lots bigger)

How do I get him to fix this? I am very poor and can't afford to fix it if he charges me.

Contact HUD you have rights as a renter and he did not provide you a safe and livable quarters. Send the landlord a notice in writing and cc HUD (the Department of Housing and Development) HUD is not about low income and welfare they are about safe housing they can help! Good Luck!

If you had documentation on your move in that the problem existed before you moved in or if the problem could not possibly be caused by you and cannot be considered normal wear and tear, you may have a chance.
Always document by email or letter any problems at th move in and take some photos. Good luck

Request it in writing. They get stuff done much faster that way.

And if the hole was there when you moved in, and it's written on your walk-through, they absolutely can not charge you for it.
