theres a lot of information out there, and most of it is wrong. chess is very subtle game and almsot everything is drastically ismplified. If you just want to learn how to beat novice players a lot, then simply memorizing a bunch of tricks in a sharp opening is the best way and u can do this alone. If you want to rise to the next level then you need a good teacher to assist you. It would be a crazy waste of time to try and do this alone.

Most chess programs for the computer have tutorials. Also, there are many web sites out there I'm sure, and you can buy books and videos that teach chess. Lots of options, you just have to pick one and do some looking.

Control the centre, castle early, keep your powerful pieces back until the right time comes.

by playing, on an actual board.
books are great.. but you really do have to play some for those to work for you.
ask your opponent to go over the game with you after you play it (take notation)
