I have an emachines pc that needs a new mobo. The mobo is a socket 478 and supports ddr 300 also in the specs is the chipset which is Intel 865. My question is, does the motherboard that I buy have to meet all of these exactly? I found a couple that are both 478 but ones chipset is Intel 865G and the other is VIA P4M900. Does it matter what chipset it is?

They both have onboard video and because my memory is ddr 300 does it have to support only ddr300 or can it support something higher?

There is no such thing as DDR 300 But there is DDR 333 which is what they call pc2700....

And no the chipset does not matter just the memory type and socket for the cpu and if its a micro ATX which will fit into anything or full size ATX if the case allows it.

The VIA p4m900 is a socket 775 which is very different to a socket 478 and also which the old emachine power supply will not power it up most likely Not enough watts or lacking the 24 pin ATX connector. The socket 478 usually uses 20 pin atx power connector with a 12 volt 4 pin connector which has 2 yellow wires and 2 black wires which connects near the cpu, The ram will not be compatible since the p4m900 uses DDR 2 So you got a problem with Old CPU and Memory swap.

the best thing you can do is by another socket 478 since almost all socket 478 motherboards support DDR 2100 (266MHz) DDR 2700 (333MHz) and DDR 3200 (400MHz)

Which all your emachine parts will work just fine if you buy a socket 478 based motherboard.

Here a link for one that will work in the case with the old stuff.

You can put in a AGP 8x video card on this motherboard which is a plus.

The only thing left that you need to do is Reformat the HDD and reinstall windows and use a cd from a family member to do this. Since the Emachine restore or Setup cd will be useless.
