Summer in the North is Winter in the South because the number of daylight hours is opposite. The tilt of the Earth changes the numer of hours the Sun is up. Winter in the North the Earth is actually close to the sun making the southern summer warmer.
December is Winter in New York but summer in Buenos Aires.
July is Summer in New York, Winter in B.A.

They are different only because they occur at opposite times of the year.
When its summer in the northern hemisphere, its winter in the southern (and vice versa).

This is because the Earth is tilted to the plane of the ecliptic (sun's path in the sky) and when the hemisphere is tilted towards the sun it's summer. That happens in the northern hemisphere and then half a year later its the southern hemisphere that is tilted toward the sun.

What would you call "summer" in the southern hemisphere if you didn't call it summer?
