Hey guys,

I'm trying to flush and fill my radiator before winter hits and I can't get my radiator petcock off! It is driving me nuts. Its on a 94 Corolla, and its kind of shaped like a + sign. I've tried using my finger, and also a pair of pliers, but I can't get the d@mn thing off. Is there a special too I can use, or am I just an idiot?

Thanks!

If it is a plastic petcock, DO NOT use excessive force to try to remove it. You may end up breaking it, and causing yourself more grief. If it is that difficult to remove, try disconnecting the lower rad hose to drain the coolant. Just be careful that you don't spill it on your arm if the coolant is hot. Make sure to have a drain bucket placed in the proper position under the hose to avoid making a huge mess. Hope this helps.

You may be an idiot, but I don't think that's the problem!! I'd go to the nearest NAPA parts store and buy the radiator petcock socket wrench and a breaker bar and use that, rather than pliers (if you're not careful, you'll simply shear it off and then you'll have a big problem!). The tool should be
around five or six dollars, plus the cost of a breaker bar. Good luck!

Those pesky little drain valves have a tendencay to seize up. Ive found that they come lose when the system is at its hottest, but the down fall is the risk of getting burned. Win the battle by flushing with the lower radiator hose removed. Good uck.

dont touch your petcock ever..and I am not kidding ..you could end up buying a new radiator..I worked on cars and we never touch the petcock ever..remove the lower rad hose to flush it out..the last time that petcock was put in was in 94 over 13yr ago..dont touch it..leave it alone..good luck..

The Ford dealer technician needs to be "set up" for this one. Have a simple drain and refill done there and hope he doesn't disconnect the lower radiator hose to drain the radiator.
