Since your gonna be in san diego, go ethnic. Go to Old Town, eat at the "Old town mexican Cafe"
Bubba Clinton ate there when he visited san diego.
Another San Diego thing is called Carne Asada Fries.
You can get these in most taco shops in san diego. Its basically Fries, topped with Beans, Carne Asada, Guacamole, sour cream, and cheese. Its a food found mainly in san diego. Just ask a local when you get here.

UPDATE:
Balboa park is great. I added two links.
One is a general calender of events for Balboa park, the other is a list of Free tuesdays. Every Tuesday several museums are open for free. Depending on which Tuesday you are there they will have different ones free.

I also read some other comments. Corvettes Diner is Unique to San Diego. Don't travel to a new city and get a Big Mac. Get the food hard to find else where.
The last link is to Kansas City Barbeque. This is where the bar scenes were shot in the Movie "Top Gun"
Have fun.

There are a few places you could go to. Sea World, the San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, La Jolla, Horton Plaza, Gaslamp District, Coronado Island and Old Town are great places to visit.

My favorite Restaurant is the Fish Market. If you like fresh Fish and Seafood, you can't miss it. Expect about 20 minutes waiting time, because it's a very frequent place.

If the kids are younger, LegoLand is a lot of fun.

If they like animals, the Wild Animal Park is a unique experience.

If they like sports, Petco Park offers tours twice a day that includes a lot of behind the scenes stuff.

If they like history, Old Town and the San Diego Mission are a lot of fun.

The views from the Point Loma lighthouse and Mount Soledad are great. If you pay to go to the lighthouse, then go down to the tidepools at low tide and check out the sea life there.

Some kids think just riding the trolley around downtown is really cool.

Seaworld will be great- the shows are amazing!
Downtown has a lot to see- there is a big naval ship there you can tour, a shopping area along the water (sea port village), Star of India ship, Gaslamp district, baseball park.

I warn you against Anthony's Seafood Grotto- all their stuff is previously frozen (yes, right there on the water, and nothing is fresh). It's a tourist trap and not very good at all. There are much better options. (most anything)

Oh, and I thought it was very cool to take a boat tour of the harbor! You can go to the left or to the right or both. To the left is the navy ship parking, and you can see Coronado, cross under the bridge. To the right is more fun for just looking at stuff. We did both and enjoyed both.

Its probably too cold for you to go to the beach, but you can try it if you're really desperate. Go to La Jolla, its the most beautiful beach in San Diego in my opinion. ride your bike around Coronado, spend a day in Balboa park (with the zoo and museums) and sea world of course. Don't perfectly plan your week out either, there might be things that you want to do that you didn't even know existed until you got there so leave some space to move around!

Balboa Park is beautiful, and will keep the kids entertained all day. There are several museums, as well as the San Diego Zoo.

Here's a searchable list of local events and activities happening in San Diego next week:

Balboa Park will keep you entertained all day. If you are going to see Shamu preform at Sea World get there in plenty of time for the best seats, it's well worth it.
