We call them scuppernongs and muskadines..there are actually two colors of "southern grapes" as you call them...There are the bronze ones, and purplish/red ones...They can be cultivated or they grown wild in the woods on low growing brush and trees...They can be used as a fresh treat, to make jellies and jams, even pies , but the best is scuppernong wine

Where I come from (East Texas) they call them muskadines.
We have them all over the part of our property that is still wooded.
