All research on this is dodgy. The worst is the survey from 1994 where they essentially just knocked on doors and asked "are you gay" - and 1 in 90 men and 1 in 300 women said "yes" even to that poor and lacking-in-confidentiality a research technique.
The least implausible stuff out there suggests that at least 6% of both male and female populations are homosexual, and something of the order of 5% of men are bi and 12% of women.
So adding those together you have about 1 in 7 high school students are bi or gay, but of course significantly fewer are "out" about their sexual orientation.

OK Kinsey report is very old although some things are still recognized in it. I suggest the "Blue Book" has a lot better answers more accurate and recently updated (2004). It is a book prepared by the Presbyterian Church, Mt Kisco, N.Y. The book is called "What We Wish We Had Known" aka "Blue Book". You can find it on the web site I have listed. All you have to do is a search at the website and you can open it from there.
Yes there are also some churches that accept us for who we are. In the work world though many things in different organizations need to be brought up to speed. Discrimination/ harrassment does happen still in the work place. I know as I am going through it in the Fire Department.
The "Blue Book" references many others who have done research on the subject as far as percentages go for the GLB community, 10.1% of the male population interviewed reported they had desires,or by behavoir, or self identified as Gay or Bisexual. 8.6% of the female population in the same instance confirmed they were Lesbian or Bisexual. As far as Transgender goes I am sure this was part of anyones survey. I believe this to be a seperate issue but they do identify with us and I do have a couple of friends who are going through the transition. One from female to male and the other male to female. One will be straight and the other will be a lesbian when all said and done.
As far as surveys go, if this one is wrong then I guess since all research for anything is done much in the same manner then all surveys are incorrect. Most polls or surveys say they are accurate 9 out of 10 times within a few % point...the numbers may be a little higher or a little lower but likely no less the 1/2% or more then 1/2% point.
I guess if we really wanted a 100% accurate count then we would all have to stand up and be counted.
Hope this helps to answer some of your questions and helps anyone out who needs some good information.

I would have to say that the percentage must be higher. Take into account all the closet cases. If you ask 20 students if they are gay most answers would not be truth full unless the poll was totally secret and then it may be a false answer. Most I would think would answer they are bi rather than gay as they are still exploring there own sexuality. I know I didn't know which way to go when I was in high school but I know I tried with both girls and guys and never regretted a single minute of experimentation.

More than that...1 in 20 is 5%. Most people think that about 10% of the population is gay. Once other orientations are included, it totals about 20%. This means that 1 in 5 high schoolers are gay.

It is higher than 1 in 20. If you go by previously accepted scientific studies, it would approximately 1 in 12 being exclusively gay.
If you include bisexual people it would be approximately 1 in 4, although some bisexual people will label themselves as either gay or straight.
The Indiana University Kinsey Reports reported 10% of males being more or less exclusively homosexual and 2% to 6% of females being more or less exclusively homosexual.
A 1990 study stated 13.95% of males and 4.25% of females had "extensive" or "more than incidental" homosexual experience.
A 1993 study found 9% of men and 5% of women were involved in frequent or ongoing homosexual experiences.
Since all three studies have similar results, it appears that the number of male homosexuals is approximately 11.0% and the number of female homosexuals is approximately 4.5%.
Since there have been fewer studies on bisexuality, the use of the Kinsey figures would lead to a conclusion of 27% male bisexuals and 9% female bisexuals.
The result is a total 26% gay, lesbian, or bisexual.

Probably pretty close, but what about those who are a little bit gay (and yes that is possible just as those who consider themselves gay may at times be a little bit straight). What about those who do not have a preference. I know two men who truly do not prefer one sex to another. They enjoy both equally. It's really hard to know. I do know this: That out of a graduating class of barely 300 males and females (so say 150 males), at least a full dozen of us turned out to be exclusively gay (including our valedictorian and the guy named best-looking boy in the class!) This was the in class of 1960!

High school students do not necessarily know or care what their sexuality is but are exploring various options. Probably 5% or so will identify as being gay later in life but probably 50% of boys will have had a homosexual encounter with another boy or boys before they leave high school. That's the way it goes.

I thought it was 1 in 10. Something like that. But yeah they say approximately 10% of the population is gay so that would make 10% of high school students gay.
