We're looking to roadtrip to the east coast for a weekend and want to camp out on the beach because, well, we're college students and it's a lot cheaper and definitely more fun. Someone told me it was illegal but I wanted to find out for sure. I tried to google it but I'm a failure at using seach engines and couldn't find anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :)

It depends on the beach. They will have signs posted everywhere I'm sure.
