It was when the moon hit the planet, plowed the Sahara, and shot right through the planet, exiting at Hawaii...
When it touched the planet it ground up a tropical jungle into a soft hot orange paste, near Arabia, at the most eastern edge of the Sahara.. where life restarted out of that orange soup.. where man came from.. but now changed from the lizards of the time, into a concoction of all the DNA that was in that squished forest... Now we have bug DNA, snake DNA, frog DNA, tree and weeds DNA, Everything... Essentially man is "walking talking moon-squish soup"... You know that old adage how to "make soup from a stone"..? Drop a stone into a pot of boiling water, and add various soup components... Well that's essentially how man got his start... Our most important event was when the moon hit the planet... which was the dino's worst event... The huge amount of sea water that went into orbit, as the moon exited the planet, instantly turned to ice that surrounded the planet in an ice bubble, which fractured from its weight, and the sun's heat, and fell to earth crushing everything... Proof is that many recovered dino skeleton ribs seem to be broken in three's, as if they were crushed and driven into the ground, below the spine, by tons of falling ice...

Our next critical event will be when mankind switches on their minds, and starts to use it... but that's only the impossible pipe-dream... It can't ever happen, because Religion maintains man's mind usage at a maximum peak of 7%...
The result will be humanity's early extinction, near the year 145,730 when and where the last human can be time-travel viewed, cracking the marrow out of the bones of the second last... because we killed this planet for treasure by absolute mass stupidity...

The beginning!
I'd say the rise of agriculture. Without that, most other advancements couldn't have happened. Hunter-gather societies can't support as many specialists as can agricultural societies, so there aren't as many people with the time to think and experiment with stuff. Even now, I have to set aside a day to do the grocery shopping, and nothing else gets done that day!
If you're interested in this kind of stuff, Jared Diamond's book "Guns, germs and Steel" is a great read. I could hardly put it down.

The development of the printed word. It made it easier for societies to exchange ideas, which brought about a faster development of new technologies and population growth that brought about exponential growth in new inventions. Before writing mankind made very little progress.
